In February 2024, the Indian hatchback car market displayed a diverse performance, with sales figures presenting a combination of growth and decline across various models. The total sales amounted to 98,788 units, marking a decrease of 18.77% compared to February 2023, when sales reached 1,21,614 units. This fluctuation highlights the evolving dynamics within the Indian automobile sector, especially in the hatchback category.

Maruti Suzuki, a leading name in the Indian car market, maintained its top position in hatchback sales. The Maruti WagonR emerged as the bestseller, with 19,412 units sold, showing a 14.94% increase from the previous year. However, not all Maruti Suzuki models enjoyed success. The Maruti Baleno and Swift experienced sales declines of 5.78% and 28.50% respectively, indicating changing consumer tastes.

Hyundai Motor India Limited faced setbacks with their hatchback models, with the Hyundai i20 and i10 NIOS experiencing significant sales drops of 44.75% and 48.66%, respectively. On the brighter side, Tata Motors saw a positive uptick with the Tata Altroz, which enjoyed a 15.50% increase in sales, totaling 4,568 units in February 2024.

When comparing month-on-month sales, the Maruti WagonR saw a 9.33% increase from January 2024, whereas the Maruti Baleno saw a 10.76% decrease. Tata Motors' hatchback models had mixed results, with the Tiago, including its electric variant, growing by 7.17% MoM, but the Altroz saw a 7.44% decline.

This suggests a shift in consumer interest towards specific models or features within the hatchback segment.

Experts attribute the changing hatchback market dynamics to rising fuel prices, inflation, and an increased interest in electric vehicles. These factors are influencing consumer behavior and preferences, leading to varied sales figures for different models.
